Coppell ISD Board Briefs are highlights of select items from the CISD Board of Trustees meetings.
Board Action and Consent Items Highlights
The Board approved the 2018-2019 academic calendar at its Jan. 22 meeting. The 2018-2019 calendar will be duplicated for 2019-2020. The calendar includes: the earlier school start date of August 15, 2018; school ending prior to Memorial Day; and closer alignment of the number of days in first and second semesters, which aligns with many surrounding districts that have proposed and/or approved earlier start dates. Trustees voted in favor of calling a School Board Trustee Election on Saturday, May 5, 2019, including a Special School Board Trustee Election for the unexpired term of Place 2. Details about the election and how to apply to run for a CISD Board Trustee are available here.
The Board also authorized the issuance of "Coppell Independent School District Unlimited Tax School Building and Refunding Bonds, Series 2018."
Trustees also approved Monthly Budget Amendments for January 2018; the Financial Report for December 2017; conveying an Easement and Right of Way to Oncor Electric Delivery Company, LLC for rerouting electrical lines around the tennis courts at the Coppell High School Ninth Grade Campus (CHS9); authorized the purchase of hardware/software to update the infrastructure in the datacenters; and approved a new Sports Officiating course at Coppell High School.
District Highlights & Awards
Campus Teachers of the Year
The Board honored the 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year from each campus. Recognition of these transformational leaders culminates in a banquet recognition in April, where one CISD Teacher of the Year is named for secondary education District Teacher of the Year and one is named for elementary education District Teacher of the Year. Teachers of the Year also are recognized during CISD Night at the Ballpark on May 25, 2018. CISD 2017-2018 Teachers of the Year are:
WFAA Good Morning Texas segment features CHS students
During the meeting, kudos were given to the Coppell High School band members, cheerleaders, Lariettes and Cowboy Carl, as well as other CISD staff and several Board members, who came out to support the City of Coppell and Old Town Coppell, which were featured on WFAA Ch. 8’s Good Morning Texas program Jan. 11.
Spelling Bee Winners
Accolades were given to the winners of the district’s annual Spelling Bee, which was held at Coppell High School Jan. 10. The winning word was hypocorism, which means an affectionate nickname for a pet or friend. The First Place winner was Preith Arunkumar, a 6th grader at CMS West; and Second Place winner Dhroov Pathare, a 6th grader at CMS East. They will advance to the Dallas County Spelling Bee Feb. 22nd.
Coppell ISD hosts Academic Decathlon
For the second year in a row, Coppell High School hosted the Region IX Academic Decathlon Jan. 19-20. Appreciation was given to CISD staff for their hard work in organizing and volunteering at the event. Coppell High School won 1st place at AcDec and placed 3rd in the Super Quiz. This means CHS will advance to the Texas Academic Decathlon State meet on Feb. 22-25 in San Antonio.
Community Health & Wellness Expo
Also highlighted was the partnership among Coppell ISD, the Coppell Chamber of Commerce and the City of Coppell to present the Community Health and Wellness Expo from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the CORE.
School Board Recognition Month
Trustees were recognized with a certificate, expressions of appreciation from each campus and a video featuring CISD students as part of January being designated School Board Recognition Month by the Texas Association of School Boards.

Debbie Youngs, Director of Research, Accountability, and Assessment, presented the district’s Texas Academic Performance Report, which is available here.
2017 December STAAR Retest Results
Susie Williams, Coordinator of Assessment, shared a report on CISD’s 2017 December STAAR Retest Results.
Construction Update
Louis Macias, Executive Director of Facilities and Special Projects, presented an update on CISD’s ongoing construction projects, including the new CMS West, Coppell High School Ninth Grade Campus (CHS9), Coppell High School Athletic Area Renovation, district wide restroom renovations and more.

2019-2020 School Year Implementation
Sid Grant, Associate Superintendent, shared information on the boundary realignment process and projected timeline for 2019-2020 implementation.
Trustees Discussion and Report Items
Trustees also gave a Legislative Update, and gave reports on the Coppell Education Foundation, the District Education Improvement Committee (DEIC) and the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC).
