Coppell ISD Board Briefs are highlights of select items from the CISD Board of Trustees meetings.
Board Action and Consent Items Highlights
Trustees voted to name the new ninth grade campus Coppell High School Ninth Grade Campus. Trustees decided to table the vote on the name of the newly constructed middle school to replace Coppell Middle School West until the Dec. 11 meeting. A Board of Trustees naming subcommittee, consisting of Trustees David Caviness, Thom Hulme and Leigh Walker, will present their suggestions for possible new names for the middle school at the Dec. 11 meeting. Both campuses will open in the 2018-2019 school year.
The Board approved the addition of a bus parking lot at the CISD Service Center to increase the capacity at the current bus lot due to the purchase of 14 new buses approved at the October meeting, as well as to accommodate parking for other district vehicles. The new lot will add 22 additional bus spaces and 27 spaces for other district vehicles and equipment. Trustees approved Choice Concrete, Inc. as the contractor for the bus lot parking addition for the cost of $186,735.
Trustees approved a resolution casting its vote for Steven Pryor as the fifth member of the Board of Directors of the Dallas Central Appraisal District. Pryor was nominated by Grand Prairie ISD and Garland ISD.
Trustees also voted in favor of the monthly budget amendments for 2017-2018 and approved the October 2017 Financial Report.
New Director of Literacy Dr. Anita de la Isla
Coppell ISD Board of Trustees approved Dr. Anita de la Isla as the new Director of Literacy for the district. Dr. de la Isla joins CISD from Irving ISD, where she has served as the Coordinator of Professional Development. She has 19 years of experience in public education, which includes serving as Bilingual Education Coordinator and Instructional Specialist for Irving ISD, as well as being a teacher for both Irving and Bryan ISDs. She will start at the district Dec. 11.

CFO Kelly Penny Finalist for TASBO Commitment to Excellence Award
Coppell ISD Chief Financial Officer Kelly Penny was recognized for being named as a finalist for Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) Commitment to Excellence Award . TASBO will announce the winner at its Dec. 1 meeting.
District Super Teachers Honored
Eleven Coppell ISD teachers were honored as “Super Teachers,” which recognizes campus educators as designers of engaging and innovative learning experiences that ignite the interests of learners. These “Super Teachers” are: Whitney Johnson and Lindsay Harris from Austin Elementary; Stephanie Richter and Priscilla Shaner from Lee Elementary; Lauren Scruggs and Jackie Kennedy from Mockingbird Elementary; Kayla Cotten from CMS North; and Jennie Allison, Andrea Cook, Lauren Muir-Billingsley and Ryan Smits from Victory Place @ Coppell.
High School Cross Country Teams Recognized for Season Success
The High School Cross Country Teams were recognized for their successful season, including both girls and boys teams winning district championships, the girls team winning a regional championship and for the girls team’s highest-ever placement at state.
CISD Staff and Teachers Present at Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching
CISD teachers and Director of Science Dr. Linda Cook were recognized for their recent presentations at the Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST). CISD staff who presented at the conference were Dr. Cook, Kate Seifert and Candace Coffee from Town Center Elementary, Teri Keith from Lakeside Elementary, Shelby Thompson from Mockingbird Elementary, Stacey Harris from Cottonwood Creek Elementary, Diana Lyn Perkins from CMS East and Jim Manley from CMS West.

Demographers Report
Bob Templeton with Templeton Demographics presented a report on the district’s latest growth and future growth projections. A copy of the presentation can be found here.
Construction Update
Louis Macias, Executive Director of Facilities and Special Projects, gave an update on the District’s current construction projects, including the new middle school, 9th grade campus, high school renovations and other district improvement projects.
Athletic Program Update
Athletic Director Joe McBride shared about recent Coppell athletic successes from the current season and 2016-2017 school year, as well as provided updates about UIL regulations and realignment.
District Strategic Design
Tammy Taylor, Director of Community Engagement, presented about CISD’s new Strategic Design Effort, including upcoming Education Summits Nov. 30, Dec. 4 and Dec. 6. Educators, parents, students and community are invited to provide input throughout the process.
Trustees Discussion and Report Items
Board Trustees gave an update on the Legislature, Exceptional Governance Training, the Bond Oversight Committee, the North Texas Area Association of School Boards and TASB Risk Management Fund, Leadership TASB and the Coppell Education Foundation.
