Bond Projects Savings Update

Chief Operations Officer Dr. Greg Axelson shared an update on the district’s voter-approved bond projects and the savings from these projects. His presentation included details about the difference between Maintenance and Operations dollars, where the current budget deficit is, and Bond or Interest and Sinking dollars, how the district has saved $15 million on its 2016 voter-approved bond projects so far, the remaining projects to be completed  and the  next steps.  The Bond Oversight Committee will meet April 6 and hear suggestions from the Facilities Committee and Visioning Committee on how to use these savings. The CISD Board must approve how to use any bond projects savings, either on new projects or to apply these funds to future projects.  This action may occur at future Board Meetings or Workshops scheduled in  April or May.

Budget Update

Chief Financial Officer Diana Sircar shared an update on the budget process, including the Legislative session, enrollment, and virtual learning and the impact on the budget. She also shared about budget savings opportunities the district is undertaking.  Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services Kristen Streeter spoke about potential revenue opportunities including open enrollment and expanding the program to K-12, the district’s marketing plan for enrollment and information on pay-to-play fees for athletics and fine arts.  Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Angie Brooks Applegate shared an update on a Virtual Academy.  CFO Sircar also shared an update on e-commerce and credit card rebate revenue, School Health and Related Services (SHARS) revenue opportunities and budget reductions in district (10%) and campus (5%) budgets.  Assistant Superintendent Streeter also shared about staffing efficiencies.  COO Dr. Axelsoon spoke about operational expenditure opportunities including custodial and transportation options. CFO Sircar spoke about future workshops and meetings, including the first draft  proposed budget being shared in May.

Visioning Committee Update

Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Angie Brooks Applegate and COO Dr. Greg Axelson shared an update on the district’s Visioning Committee process, including the correlation with prior visioning work, the Strategic Design Process and the Facilities Visioning Committee, the presentations shared with the Visioning Committee, the future plans for gathering community feedback, and the relationship between the Visioning Committee to the budget process  and  the future of the district.
