High School Curriculum

The mission of the Coppell ISD school counseling program is to provide support and guidance to students as a means to foster academic success, post-secondary and career preparation, and personal/social development. Parents, caregivers, and educators all play an important role in helping children feel supported and confident in their ability to learn and grow. There is an important and invaluable partnership between our families and staff members that is necessary to help our kids be successful.

The State of Texas requires school districts to provide instructional lessons on character traits and mental health wellness. As a part of the counseling program, CISD will include lessons regarding the Texas Education Code (TEC) §29.906 required character traits:

  • Courage

  • Trustworthiness, including honesty, reliability, punctuality, and loyalty

  • Integrity

  • Respect and courtesy

  • Responsibility, including accountability, diligence, perseverance, and self-control

  • Fairness, including justice and freedom from prejudice

  • Caring, including kindness, empathy, compassion, consideration, patience, generosity, and charity

  • Good citizenship, including patriotism, concern for the common good and the community, and respect for authority and the law

  • School pride

  • Gratitude

The lessons will also meet the state requirements for mental health wellness. Additionally, the State Board of Education (SBOE) updated the Health curriculum standards called the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to include mental wellness. In the early grade TEKS, students develop fluency around emotions and self-regulation and understanding the relationship between feelings, thoughts, and behavior. In subsequent grades, students learn and practice appropriate ways to solve interpersonal conflicts, work to develop a positive self-image, and develop healthy self-management skills.

Coppell ISD has partnered with Character Strong to provide instruction for students in ninth through twelfth grade regarding the required character traits and mental health wellness.

To ensure that parents have the resources needed to understand what your child is learning at school and reinforce this learning at home, CISD is providing online access to the student curriculum and family engagement resources in the Character Strong digital programs. Parents will be able to access this content as an Authorized User on our district’s license for 1 month during the 2022–2023 school year.

The following information provides more details about family access to the Character Strong digital programs, including instructions about how to get started. We hope this family access is helpful to you as you support your child’s learning at school and at home.
