Dual Language Immersion (DLI)
Overview
Coppell ISD's Dual Language program is the research-based bilingual instructional model for second language acquisition for native Spanish-speaking students who are acquiring English as a second language. Coppell ISD also offers Dual Language opportunities for Non-Native Spanish-speaking students to learn Spanish as a Second Language with their native Spanish-speaking peers. There are two models, which vary by grade level. The goal of DLI is for students to become Bilingual and Biliterate with sociocultural competency.
One-Way: All students are learning English as their second language. CISD offers a One-Way DLI program in PreKindergarten for qualifying, native Spanish speakers.
Two-Way: Students who are learning Spanish as a second language (Spanish Learners) and students who are learning English as a second language (Emergent Bilinguals) are in the same classroom. They learn all core content in both English and Spanish while supporting one another in learning academic content in two languages. CISD offers Two-Way in Kinder through 5th grade.
