Community Service Summer Reminders

Guidelines:

The organization for which you volunteer must be a non-profit agency or a for-profit one that has been approved by the counselor, such as a hospital or nursing home.
You shall receive no pay, academic credit, award, or any other compensation for the hours earned.
You must complete a minimum of 10 community service hours per school year.
Activities that do not qualify for community service hours include:
- Services required for the learner for redress or recompense, i.e., mandatory teen court service to dismiss a ticket
- Activities for which the learner receives direct benefit, i.e., fundraising for a sports team
- Activities for which the learner is paid or compensated in some other manner.
- Activities that benefit a for-profit organization or business, unless approved by the counselor.
- Activities that are of a religious nature, i.e., teaching a religious class. However, church-sponsored activities addressing physical needs, i.e., collecting blankets, building projects, volunteering at Vacation Bible School, performing mission work, or babysitting during religious services do qualify for community service hours.

Log onto www.x2VOL.com.
Find local opportunities or add your own projects.
Sign up for opportunities.
Receive updates about new opportunities.
Receive reminders about the opportunities you've selected.
Track your progress against your goals. Count each hour of actual work as one hour and round hours to the half-hour mark as needed, i.e., 16 minutes beyond an hour can be rounded to 1.5 hours and 46 minutes beyond an hour can be rounded to two hours.
Add comments about your experience.
Print the activity log.
- Most college applications include a section for Community and Volunteer service. After you print your log, you can attach it to your applications. Even if your community service hours do not meet the guidelines above, you should add them to your database so you can report all of your volunteer hours on applications. You may add all the volunteer hours you've completed since your Freshman year to your database. Keep in mind, though, that only the hours that meet the guidelines will be counted toward New Tech's annual 10-hour requirement for community service per school year.
