Message from the Superintendent: Budget Update and Tonight’s Budget Community Dialogue

July 25, 2025

Dear CISD Community,

I want to share a brief update on tonight’s Budget Board Workshop. CISD Trustees approved a resolution authorizing the Superintendent or Chief Financial Officer to defease, or prepay, debt from the district’s Interest and Sinking (I&S) or Debt Service fund, which is used to pay the principal and interest on the bonds issued by the district.  The district will immediately use $2 to $3 million from the I&S fund balance of $13 million to prepay bond debt and will defeasance additional debt throughout 2024-2025, which will allow CISD to reduce the amount of future Interest & Sinking tax rate increases.  As a reminder, the I&S funds and tax rate are separate from the Maintenance and Operations or M&O tax rate, which funds district operations. Interest & Sinking funds cannot be used for M&O.

During tonight’s workshop, Trustees also heard updates and discussed the following topics:

Details on our budget and budget planning process are available at www.coppellisd.com/budget. We also have a Frequently Asked Questions page on the budget available at www.coppellisd.com/o/cisd/page/budget-challenges-faq. As a reminder, the community can share budget questions or feedback via email at input@coppellisd.com

Tonight marked our last meeting in the LGI room at CMS West. We will return to the Board Room of the Vonita White Administration Building at 200 S. Denton Tap Road in August with our Monday, Aug. 12 Budget Board Workshop at 6 p.m.  I would like to thank CMS West for the gracious use of their facility while our Board Room underwent a technology upgrade as part of the 2023 Bond.

Thank you all for your support of Coppell ISD.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brad Hunt
Superintendent
