PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. It is a research-based approach to discipline founded on the assumption and belief that all children can exhibit appropriate behavior. PBIS consists of rules, routines, and physical arrangements that are developed and taught by all teachers and staff. Research indicates that 3-5 behavioral expectations that are positively stated, easy to remember, and significant to the climate are best.

At the end of the school year last year, students and staff participated in a survey to help identify our three target areas. With representatives from each grade level as well as a Special Education teacher, counselor, and Administrators, we implemented our PBIS team and decided on our Cowboy Code. This code was presented to staff at our Back to School staff development and presented to students in a school-wide assembly.

Our three target areas for Pinkerton are: the hallways, cafeteria, and dismissal. Specific expectations for students and staff for these areas have been developed and taught. We recite the Cowboy Code daily on announcements and reward students for demonstrating these positive behaviors.
