High School Credit Courses Available in Middle School

The following information is only true for courses that offer high school credit.

Available Courses:

  • Algebra 1 Honors

  • Geometry Honors

  • Spanish 1 Honors (8th grade only)

  • Art 1 Honors (not offered in middle school after 2025-26 school year)

  • Fundamentals of Computer Science (8th grade only)

  • Professional Communications (7th grade only)

If your child is enrolled in a high school credit class, please familiarize yourself with the following information.

Grading & GPA

Courses for high school credit are recorded on a students academic transcript. The transcript is a vital part of the college application.

5.0 GPA Scale

The Coppell High School grade point average (GPA) is on a weighted 5.0 grade point scale. Grade points are assigned to each semester grade as follows. Any semester grade below a 70 is averaged into a learner’s GPA with “0” grade points.

Level 4

Eligible Advanced Place (AP), some International Baccalaureate (IB), and other designated courses shall be categorized and weighted as Level IV courses

Level 3

Eligible honors courses, dual credit courses, some IB courses, and other designated courses shall be categorized and weighted as Level III courses

Level 2

All other eligible courses not categorized and weighted as Level II courses

Level 1

Eligible local credit courses shall be categorized and weighted as Level I courses

4.0 GPA Scale

Many colleges and universities request a 4.0 GPA on transcripts. We also include a weighted 4.0 Scale. Below is the conversion table for those grades.

In-Country transfer grades: Students who transfer into CHS with letter grades on their official transcript will be given the equivalent lower end number grade as written in the table above.

Transcript/GPA Guidelines: If the Distance Learning or Internet Course will award a learner a high school credit, the grade earned will appear on the learner’s transcript with the credit earned. Credit earned for these courses will be at a level II per CISD School Board Policy EIC Local.

CISD CLASS RANKING AND GPA POLICY for Class of 2025 and beyond

  •  The § symbol is used to denote classes that count for RIC (2025 & beyond)

  • Coppell High School ranks only the top 10% of the class.  

  • Junior GPA and class rank are updated in June and January after semester grades are posted.

  • Senior GPA and class rank are updated in June and October to reflect summer grades and changes in enrollment and January after semester grades are posted.

  • Final class rank of the top 10% of the graduating class will be calculated at the end of the Fall semester of the senior year.  However, a learner’s GPA continues through the end of their senior year.

  • Students with 5 or more Pass/Fall grades transferred into their High School transcript will not be ranked.

  • Beginning with the graduating class of 2025, Rank-in-Class GPA will be calculated as follows:

    • Rank-in-Class GPA will be calculated based on the semester grades earned in specific high school credit courses, regardless of the grade in which they are taken. The included courses are listed in the next column.
